Oil Buying Guide-How to Buy the right Oil for your Gas Lawn Mower
Once you get a machine in your garage whether it is a lawn mower or a car, oil changing after a few miles of run is mandatory to keep the machine well maintained and long lasting.
Being a newbie, several new questions would arise in your mind that what kind of oil should you get? What oil is good for your specif machine/motor? What is the best place to buy the best oil for your lawn mower? etc
In this article, we will share all major to minor point you must notice before buying the right oil for your lawn mower.
The First Encounter
The first encounter you will have when you think to get an oil bottle from the market is the terms. There are some specific terms like 10W-30 or such that labelled over the box. You may also come across with the SAE term or API term. You may be unaware of them. After the completion of this article, you will master the oil purchase.
See the Labels
Every reputable manufacturer like Briggs and Stratton labels on the oil bottle, for what the oil is made for? They make it clear if the oil is made for diesel engines or gasoline engines. Before buying oil for your lawn mower you must ask for or see the display picture of the product from every angle and confirm what you need.
Understand standard/category Labels
You must also check the labels of American Petroleum Institute (API), SAE(Society of Automotive Engineers) viscosity number and SL service. Also, check the ILSAC GF equivalent of API.

|ILSAC GF-1||The ILSAC GF-1 standard indicates the oil meets both API SH and the Energy Conserving II (EC-II) requirements. It was created in 1990 and upgraded in 1992 and became the minimum requirement for oil used in American and Japanese automobiles.|
|ILSAC GF-2||ILSAC GF-2 replaced GF-1 in 1996. The oil must meet both API SJ and EC-II requirements. The GF-2 standards requires 0W-30, 0W-40, 5W-20, 5W-30, 5W-40, 5W-50, 10W-30, 10W-40 and 10W-50 motor oils to meet stringent requirements for phosphorus content, low temperature operation, high temperature deposits and foam control.|
|ILSAC GF-3||An ILSAC GF-3 an oil must meet both API SL and the EC-II requirements. The GF-3 standard has more stringent parameters regarding long-term effects of the oil on the vehicle emission system, improved fuel economy and improved volatility, deposit control and viscosity performance. The standard also requires less additive degradation and reduced oil consumption rates over the service life of the oil.|
|ILSAC GF-4||ILSAC GF-4 is similar to the API SM service category, but it requires an additional sequence VIB FuelEconomy Test (ASTM D6837).|
|ILSAC GF-5||Introduced in October 2010 for 2011 and older vehicles, designed to provide improved high temperature deposit protection for pistons and turbochargers, more stringent sludge control, improved fuel economy, enhanced emission control system compatibility, seal compatibility, and protection of engines operating on ethanol-containing fuels up to E85.|
|ILSAC GF-6||The ILSAC GF-6 specification is currently in development and will probably be divided into two sub-specifications. ILSAC GF-6A will be fully backwards compatible with ILSAC GF-5 but would offer better fuel economy, better engine protection and improved performance while maintaining durability. ILSAC GF-6B would deliver similar performance as ILSAC GF-5A but will allow lower viscosity oils like xW-16, taking advantage of the fuel economy benefits offered by the new SAE 16 viscosity grade.|
Viscosity means oil’s resistance to flow. Before clicking the buy button for oil you must check the viscosity of oil required for your machine. The manual of the machine clearly labels the required viscosity of oil. Here we give some illustration of how to read viscosity labels.
The most important viscosity parameter for oil is SAE viscosity for drivers. The SAE classification divides oil into two seasons grade, Winter (W) and summer. The winter oil mark graded from 0-25 while summer oil mark graded from 20-60.
Mostly drivers used to have oils which are multi-seasoned compatible i.e at low temperature this oil will act as a winter grade oil and in summer season the same oil will work as a summer grade oil.
In case of winter grades oil, smaller the value before W depicts the higher compatibility of oil for winter seasons or low temperatures. After W, higher the numeric value depicts the slower decrease of viscosity along with temperature growth.
For example, the oil market with 0W30 label has low viscosity in the entire range of temperature, thus cause smaller resistance. Similarly, oil marked with 10W-60 label does not flow down the cylinder walls at high temperature because of its slower rate of increasing viscosity.
Nowadays, one season oils like (5W, 10W, 15W or 20, 30, 40, 50) have been replaced by the multi-season oils like (5W-30, 5W-40, 10W-40, 15W-40 etc.)
Multi seasons oils are meant to be used for both high and low temperatures. Oil plays an important role to keep the engine well maintained and improves durability as well. It also does the reduction in fuel consumption with a comfortable drive.
We recommend to go through the product manual of lawn mower and then opt the right oil variant for your mower.
Before choosing the best oil for your machine specifically for your lawn mower, you must have to know something about oil formulation and the ingredients which formulated the oil.
If you have some basic knowledge of ingredients in the oil you will be able to make this oil long-lasting by putting some additives in the oil. You may need to add more ingredients in the middle of the oil’s life due to drastic change in weather or due to some internal issues.
For example, you selected a high viscosity oil for your machine, After some time due to extreme use the viscosity of oil get lower and the piston and the engine of the machine started rattled. How would do handle that? For this, you must have some knowledge of additives.
You must have some knowledge about the viscosity-index improver. The ingredient will reduce the oil’s tendency to get thinner at high temperatures.
Implication of Detergents
The detergents will prevent any deposit of rust and corrosion in the engine caused due to high temperatures. Similarly, some dispersants disperse solid particles and prevent them from making any sludge or acids.
The additional knowledge of antiwear agents is mandatory to choose the right oil. In the old days, the lubricating firm used to get lost and antiwear agents had to look after the metal surfaces. A zinc and phosphorus compound called ZDDP used along with other phosphorous and sulphur compounds.
They tend to reduce the engine’s friction and can improve the engine’s fuel economy. Graphite, molybdenum, and other compounds are used for this motive.
Just because the 0° F viscosity rating is low doesn’t mean the oil will flow readily at low temperatures. The oil contains wax particles that can congeal and reduce flow, so these additives are used to prevent it.
When engine temperature goes up it is likely that it will push emission to rise further. The antioxidants are there to perform the green task.
The manufacturers knows the engine better than you. A good manufacturer specifies the need of engines in its product manual. Every lawn mower comes up with a manual, maintenance tips guide and operating schemes. A prudent user is one who goes through the product manual at least once and should note down key points of his/her use.
Always buy the oil according to the product manual. We have shared all the important points you may need to follow before buying an oil for your lawn mower or a car.
